At the Speed-dating workshop held on the 24th June I received advice from John to select a film and explore deeply. But, my teammate and I are going to explain the two cultures of China and Korea. And not only the information that can vary depending on the historical background or genre, but also the information I figured out the gap from a last pre-test. Wan gave advice to think about what information to focus on, and I thought that the plan to develop it in detail should be moved forward. Yea-jin was advised to fundamentally think about culture, how to accurately convey cultural information because it might be subjective and personal, or what the criteria for it being accurate are. Ali asked whether to convey information only in one direction or induce people to discuss cultural topics, which gave me a chance to think more because I thought it would convey one direction. From his recommendation to read the 'eating with bodies' thesis, I chose this as a topic for a student-led seminar on 12th July. under the topic that ‘how can we appreciate not appropriate other cultures’, I prepared activities for people to easily share their idea inspired by this post. Although I needed to prepare alone because Moxue and Sanya, who had to prepare together, were not interested in the seminar at all, the people who participated shared their own concept of the cultures well.
At the meeting on the 29th, I shared my desk research about why I need to introduce Korean cultural information to people because some people wondered that if I choose it because I am Korean, then I need to find a reason. Whilst the global lockdowns build the desire for ‘new’ types of content that viewers may not have otherwise tried out. And Netflix’s Korean movies and series have received incredible support from a global audience this year, with over 40 original K-dramas now available to watch on the platform. And Netflix published that they considers Korea is the content hub, so it will Invest $500 Million (£361,000,000.00) in Korean Content during 2021. In response, my team member, Moxue investigated Netflix's recommendation system and the process of purchasing licenses, but I thought it was less related to the project. I thought that Netflix's recommendation system does not work well so that people spend more time deciding what to watch. Also, Netflix itself has taken a different step from digital and data algorithm based companies, such as purchasing a Billboard company, which is out-of-home advertising on the street and promoting new films/series considering that new films are not promoted as a taste-based recommendation system.
To consider the sustainability of my FMP, a workshop was held on 1st July. Taking Netflix as an example, I researched data focusing on the current functions of Netflix's web and apps. Netflix has a variety of works arranged according to categories on the main screen to promote newly released works and personalised recommendations. Considering that many posters are exposed in the boarding screen at a time and with scrolling paraphrasing, clips are automatically played. Those kinds of exposure spend more energy than the one on the screen, however, the reason why they have to design is that it is a service that people pay for. The main screen of Netflix is known as a representative example of the A/B test, and it could be the blind spot caused by designing human-centred rather than the effectiveness of the environment. There was a paradox that an hour of watching streaming emission 55 gCO2e (grams of carbon dioxide equivalents) in Europe. To overcome this, Netflix is producing nature-related documentaries or reinvesting in ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. However, the limitation of Netflix's efforts was the conflict between the perspective of business profit and ethical perspective. People want to appreciate works of high quality because they paid for it.even though they do not need that much high-definition. After a short team activity, I asked the person in charge who led this workshop what she thought about this tangled problem, but I did not get a clear answer. Modern society requires designers to design from an ethical and environmental perspective, but doubts have been raised whether sustainability might be a fantasy in the real world to decide between ethics and profit.
