I conducted an online interview with professor Mark Shuttleworth, a translator expert at Hong Kong Baptist University with Moxue on 9th September. Based on case studies of Korean films, which were translated into English, I prepared questions. The first case study was the fact that depending on the flow of the film, the word could maintain or change its originality. Darcy W. Paque is a well-known translator in Korea, and translated director Bong's film Parasite (2019). He created a new word or replaced words that were familiar to English-speaking people to bridge the gap that cannot be translated into English. For instance, Chapaguri is a dish made by mixing two types of instant Raman with Chapagetti and Neoguri, but it was replaced by RamDong, which is a combination of ramen and Udon rather than explaining the background of the food. It did not explain at all what Chapaguri is. Also, he did replace the original word like translated Seoul National University into Oxford, which omitted the explanation of SNU's reputation and replaced it with words more familiar to English-speaking audiences. When the film was released, it got attentioned that it was well-translated, but I could not accept it.
According to what prof. Mark said during the interview, the limitations of translation were clear in fact. There is a limitation that films/ TV dramas can use up to 35 alphabets on one scene which is a maximum number that the audience can read. Thus, it is impossible to provide additional explanations, and shorten sentences using idioms or replacing words rather than translate accurately as they can do. Also, I identified that translation cannot surpass the cultural gap, which can be good news for my project since there is a niche market that needs my design outcome. He confirmed that translation has a possibility of input translation of the translator's personal experiences, prejudices, and prejudices and it will vary how familiar the translator is to the culture and their language sense because it is a human domain same as the quality issues.
Special thanks to Maria S and her dad Prof. Shuttleworth.
